It’s not an uncommon accusation against President Trump and the Republican leadership in Congress that they are constantly valuing their political party over their country as they feebly attempt to govern the nation.
Likewise, the right-wing propaganda outlet Fox News with its 24-hour feed of misinformation disguised as truth designed to advance the conservative Republican agenda is equally condemned for putting profit over veracity and the non-partisan public good.
The latest story from Morris County, New Jersey proves that both Trump and Fox News value selfish personal profit over even their own vaunted Republican party.
The New Jersey Globe is reporting that the Morris County Republican party organization is “nearly broke,” after holding a wildly unsuccessful winter fundraiser at the Trump National Golf Course and hiring Fox News host Greg Gutfield to speak at the event.
That the Republican Party of Morris County held their fundraiser at a Trump-owned property demonstrates the wisdom of forcing anyone who assumes the office of the presidency to divest themselves of outside business interests that could cause such an obvious conflict of interest.
Perhaps even New Jersey Republican rank and file are fed up with the idea of the president personally profiting from his tenure in office, since the fundraiser only managed to raise a total of $58,335 from the attendees of an event that cost over $64,000 to mount.
With $24,487 going to Trump’s Golf Club for the rental of the event space and a $30,000 appearance fee going to the Fox News personality, the outflow of cash far exceeded the intake of donations once the other expenses were factored in.
The unsuccessful replenishment of the county party coffers leaves the Morris County GOP with only $13,956 left to support its candidates in the coming elections which are certain to be the most competitive races the county has seen in years.
With the local Republican Party organization spending more cash on fundraisers than on candidate support, Democrats may finally have a chance at winning local freeholder races which Republicans have monopolized for the last 45 years. The Republican financial mismanagement could also play a big factor in the outcome of the contests for two Congressional seats in the heretofore deeply red county this November.
Meanwhile President Trump managed to collect his tidy profit on the event, and Fox News’ Gutfield made more than half the annual median American income for a few hours work talking to New Jersey GOP political fat cats.
They can’t even put party over country competently any more, which while infuriating on one level, at least provides a glimmer of hope for the future as more and more people realize the con to which they’ve been subjected.
